Phase II
More Separated Bicycle Lanes Coming to McClellan Road
The City of Cupertino, in partnership with Cupertino Union School District and Fremont Union High School District are pleased to announce Phase II of the McClellan Road Separated Bike Lanes Project, which is aimed at creating a safer environment for our students, families and residents, particularly those who bike to school and work.
The McClellan Road Separated Bikeways Project is a multi-phase project that will install separated/Class IV bike lanes on McClellan Road and Pacifica Drive between Byrne and Torre avenues. The first phase of the project, which constructed improvements between Stelling Road and Imperial Avenue, was completed last year. The Public Works Department is now moving forward with the second phase of the project, which will construct similar improvements on McClellan Road between Stelling Road and De Anza Boulevard, and along Pacifica Drive between De Anza Boulevard and Torre Avenue.
The project will create an on-street bike lane which physically separates motor vehicles and bicyclists using curbs and mountable strips. As a result, on-street parking will be permanently removed along McClellan Road and Pacifica Drive along the segment between Stelling Road and Torre Avenue. This project is intended to improve biking conditions to the Cupertino Library and Faria Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Monta Visa High, and Kennedy Middle schools.
On Tuesday, July 21, Council awarded the construction contract for Phase 2 of the McClellan Road Separated Bike Lane project. The parking prohibition will become effective upon the second reading of the ordinance, tentatively scheduled for the City Council meeting on August 18.
Construction is tentatively anticipated to begin in early to mid-August and last approximately three months, assuming no unanticipated delays. Weekday construction hours each day will be approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Safety Considerations: Safety for both the road users and workers is the highest priority for the City. There will be full-time inspection to continuously monitor the working environment and to direct the contractor to correct any issues with traffic management. The contractor is required to provide safe passage for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists using the roadway. They must always provide an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant walkway for pedestrians. Bicyclists may be directed to share the lane as needed and motorists may be delayed for up to several minutes. To ensure that proper attention is given to the operation and maintenance of traffic safety measures, the project will have a dedicated sub-contractor for traffic control. Additionally, all current requirements and restrictions related to Covid-19 construction protocols will be strictly enforced.
Traffic Impacts: The road will be narrowed during construction and there will likely be times when only one lane is open, with a flagger to direct 2-way traffic. Routes for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained on McClellan during construction. Please take some time before schools reopen to review your family’s morning drop-off and pick-up routines and/or the route your child takes to school. You may consider making changes to your route, including walking if possible. Suggested walking and biking routes to your school can be found at cupertino.org/schoolmaps
We appreciate your patience and understanding through this construction process. We believe that this project, once completed, will be a huge benefit to our community and greatly improve safety for the many students, families, and staff members who utilize bike transportation on their way to school and work.
