Holiday String Lights are Electronic Waste!

Broken string lights must be disposed of as household hazardous electronic waste.

Electronic waste that ends up in the landfill increased toxicity and hurts our environment. String lights in the recycling stream will tangle and break the machines.

Help dispose of broken string lights safely. Residents have several options for convenient disposal. Visit cupertino.org/hhw to view the 'Electronic Waste' disposal resources.

Holiday Collection Schedule

Food waste goes into the green organics cart or bin.

All businesses and most residents have access to a green organics cart or bin. If you do not have an organics cart, please contact Recology to request one. Learn more about organics recycling and food waste diversion at cupertino.org/foodscraps

Do you have the right carts?

You should have three carts with the City of Cupertino logo:

  • Green for organics and food scraps
  • Blue for recycling
  • Gray for waste to landfill

If you have an tan-colored yard waste cart or outdated trash or recycling carts, please contact Recology at RecologySouthBay@Recology.com or 408.725.4020

Meet Recology South Bay

The City of Cupertino contracts with Recology South Bay for residential and commercial waste hauling. No other waste hauler is permitted to collect waste in the City of Cupertino. This includes trash, recycling, and organic waste. Transporting your own waste direction to a sanctioned facility is okay.

The benefit of contracting with one hauler is to keep the prices as low as possible while maintaining a standard level of service for the whole community.

Think before you Throw!
Check out ways to reduce and reuse your waste

Everyone who lives or works in Cupertino can help the climate and the environment by practicing the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Limiting the amount of garbage that goes into landfills reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as well as air, water and soil pollution. It also helps minimize the use of resources to produce such items, as well as of the resources involved in transporting and handling them once they have become trash.
