Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is a partnership program between City staff and community partners, who collaborate to advance the program's mission: to create a safer environment for students and families in Cupertino to travel to and from school actively.

The City of Cupertino is committed to safeguarding community members of all ages as they navigate our diverse network of bikeways, roadways, and walkways. To ensure that we achieve this goal, we are actively working on expanding beyond the traditional infrastructure and enforcement approach to traffic safety.

This unique approach has led to the creation of Cupertino Safe Routes to School, a program that brings together various stakeholders to address student safety throughout the City.

Enforcement

The Sheriff's Department is an integral part of Cupertino Safe Routes to School

In addition to enforcing traffic laws around schools, Safety Resource Officers offer bicycle safety presentations at schools and will participate in a school's bike rodeo (bike safety skills course), if requested.

We conducted a community outreach effort in 2020/2021 to better understand how our community feels about the role of enforcement within the current Safe Routes to School framework. Click here to review the survey results.

Concerned about traffic around your school?

If there is particular behavior you'd like to discourage around a school, place an enforcement request directly with the Sheriff's Department at their non-emergency number below. Before you call, be prepared to provide the following information about your enforcement request:

1) School

2) Specific location(s)
What intersection or stretch of road?

3) Behavior that needs to be discouraged
Illegal left turns, speeding, etc...

4) Particular date or day(s) of the week
Choose one or two days. Give at least two days notice.

5) What specific time of day?
What time does school start or let out? That time plus or minus 30 minutes is a good place to start.

Cupertino Safe Routes to School hosts numerous events throughout the year.

Working Group Meetings throughout the year

The Cupertino Safe Routes to School Working Group meets most months of the school year to collaborate in expanding the program.

Earth Day in April

Safe Routes to School hosts a booth at the City's annual Earth and Arbor Day Festival. Stop by our booth to pay us a visit!

High School Student Representative Program recruitment in the spring

Cupertino's Safe Routes to School program recruits high school students who are passionate about either bicycling, healthy lifestyles, accessibility, safe transportation, and/or campus safety as part of our Working Group.

Middle School Bike Skills Workshops: June through August

These bike safety workshops prepare rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to bike to middle school and beyond.

Fall Bike Fest in September

A family-focused event that is held in the fall. Join us to enjoy a bike safety rodeo, pedal-powered bike blender smoothies, bike decorating, bike rides, and more!

Get Involved

We are always looking for partners to work with us to further the Cupertino Safe Routes to School mission: to create a safer environment for students and families in Cupertino to travel to and from school actively. Here are some ways to get involved:

Parents:

Organize encouragement events at your child's school, such as: Walk and Roll Days, Walking School Buses, and/or Bike Trains. Learn about these types of events here.
Work with us to bring bicycle and pedestrian education to your child's school, such as bike rodeos, middle school bike workshops, and pedestrian education.
Help us identify areas of the city that can be improved to make Cupertino more walkable and bikeable.

Students:

High School Students: Join our Working Group as a high school representative.
Enter the high school Streetlight Banner Artwork Design Contest.

Anyone from the Community:

Attend our Working Group meetings. Find dates, agendas, and Zoom info at our Working Group page.

Getting to School

The City of Cupertino strongly encourages all families to choose alternative transportation for traveling to and from school. Alternative transportation includes walking, biking, carpooling, and transit. To this end, Cupertino Safe Routes to School has developed various resources to assist families in determining appropriate routes for walking and biking to school. Please reference the resources below when planning your child's route to school.
