In 2013, the City drained Memorial Park ponds to respond to drought restrictions. The ponds had significant water loss due to the age and poor condition of the concrete liner, as well as considerable evaporative surfaces. The City has not refilled the ponds since 2013 due to ongoing drought conditions.

The project to remove the ponds was approved and funded by City Council in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021-2022 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Future improvements within the area will be considered with the Memorial Park Specific Plan that was approved in the same FY21-22 CIP, and will begin the design and public engagement process in the summer of 2022.
